Marcos Bruno Almeida Colombo

B.Sc. degree in Chemistry and M.Sc. student in Water Technology

I can best describe myself as analytical by nature, critical thinker and an independent worker. During my studies, I had the opportunity to work in several laboratories, allowing me to gain experience with many lab instrumentation. I am also an avid learner and especially passionate about technology in general.

Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry

Institute of Chemistry of Universidade de São Paulo (IQ-USP)

2015 – 2019

Experience: Internships and research projects

Intern - Process Engineering

Aqana BV

May 2023 – Present

Description:
  • Assisted on the validation of a calculation model for prediction of off-gases (i.e., odorous and explosive gases);

  • Evaluated feasibility of multiple approaches for odor treatment;

  • Performed literature review and planned experiments for chemical characterization of off-gases.

Thesis internship (MSc)

Wetsus, European centre of excellence for sustainable water technology

Characterization of nanoparticles in water by AF4-MALS

Sep 2022 – Apr 2022

Description:
  • Assisted on the development of methods for the analysis of submicrometric and nanometric particles in water using field flow fractionation (AF4) and multiple detectors, such as multi-angle light scattering (MALS) and ICP-MS;

  • Operated an ultrafiltration setup to verify its feasibility as a particle concentration step prior to sample analysis;

  • Performed literature review, planned experiments and carried out laboratory analyses.

Part-time internship - Research Assistant

NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences

Oct 2021 – Oct 2022

Description:
  • The research projects involved the characterization of wastewater discharged by plastic recyclers, so that it would be possible to later decide on the best treatment options;

  • I carried out analyzes in the laboratory, data processing and wrote reports;

  • Some of the analyzes I performed involved: LC-MS, ICP-OES, determination of solids, color, turbidity, chemical oxygen demand and others.

Intern - Research Assistant (BSc)

Wetsus, European centre of excellence for sustainable water technology

Dec 2020 – Aug 2021

Description:
  • I received training on how to operate and do basic maintenance on the field flow fractionation (AF4) system;

  • Conducted lab analysis of samples using AF4-MALS and other complementary techniques;

  • Operated a reverse osmosis setup to verify its feasibility as a particle concentration step prior to sample analysis;

  • Data processing, presenting and report writing.

Undergraduate Research Student

Institute of Chemistry of Universidade de São Paulo (IQ-USP)

Aug 2017 – Jul 2019

Description:
  • I participated in two research projects, actively working in the laboratories and processing experimental data;

  • Performed sample preparation for elemental analysis, such as microwave assisted digestion and solid phase extraction;

  • Learned the fundamentals of atomic spectrometry by working with Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (F-AAS) and ICP-OES;

  • Assessment of the method's figures of merit (e.g. precision, limit of detection and recovery).

Scientific paper published: Brazilian Journal of Analytical Chemistry, 2019, 6 (23) pp 20-28.
